What to Expect

Before you see your health care provider, learn more about this procedure, treatment or test. Remember that individual treatment plans and patient experiences may vary. This information is provided to help you understand what may happen during your visit or treatment.

About this Procedure

When you first see your health care provider, you will be asked about your back pain, including how often it occurs and how severe it is.

  • Sit, stand, and walk
  • Walk on your toes and then your heels
  • Bend forward, backward, and sideways
  • Lift your legs straight up while lying down

Your provider will try to determine the cause of your back pain and whether it is likely to quickly get better with simple measures such as ice, mild painkillers, physical therapy, and proper exercises. Most of the time, back pain will get better using these approaches. Your health care provider will perform a physical exam to try to find the exact location of your pain, and determine how it affects your movement. You will be asked to: If the pain is worse when you lift your legs straight up while lying down, you may have sciatica, especially if you also feel numbness or tingling in one of your legs. Your health care provider will also move your legs into different positions, including bending and straightening your knees. A rubber hammer is used to check your reflexes and to see if your nerves are working properly. Your provider will touch your skin in many places, using a pin, cotton swab, or feather. This reveals how well you can feel, or sense, things.

How to Prepare

Sometimes there are things you can do that may positively affect your outcome. Here are some examples. Be sure to follow any instructions given to you by your provider.

On the Day of the Procedure

  • Most people with back pain improve or recover within 4 to 6 weeks.
  • To get better quickly, take the right measures when you first feel pain.
  • If your pain has not improved after use of medicines, physical therapy, and other treatments, your doctor may recommend an epidural injection.
  • A massage therapist
  • Someone who performs acupuncture
  • Someone who does spinal manipulation (a chiropractor, osteopathic doctor, or physical therapist)
