About this Procedure

Certain vaccines can help prevent some types of bacterial meningitis:

  • Haemophilus vaccine (HiB vaccine) given to children helps
  • Pneumococcal vaccine is given to children and adults
  • Meningococcal vaccines is given to children and adults; some communities hold vaccination campaigns after an outbreak of meningococcal meningitis.
  • First dose: 2 months of age
  • Second dose: 4 months of age
  • Third dose: 6 months of age (if needed, depending on brand of vaccine)
  • Final/Booster dose: 12 to 15 months of age

Household members and others in close contact with people who have meningococcal meningitis should receive antibiotics to prevent becoming infected. Doses of Hib vaccine are usually recommended at these ages:
